Broadband provider versus broadband network
The company sending the bill is not always the company operating the cables. Openreach, CityFibre and other network operators provide infrastructure used by retail broadband providers, while Virgin Media, Gigaclear, Hyperoptic, Community Fibre and other operators may use their own or partner networks in particular areas.

How to test a broadband provider fairly
- Test over Ethernet first.Connect directly to the main router where possible and turn off the device’s Wi-Fi.
- Pause other traffic.Stop downloads, cloud backup, console updates and 4K streams during the controlled test.
- Repeat at different times.Compare daytime and evening results to expose congestion or changing wireless performance.
- Test Wi-Fi separately.Repeat in the rooms you use. A good wired result and poor room result point towards the home network.
- Compare with the correct figure.Use the estimated or guaranteed range supplied for your address, not merely the fastest package in an advert.
Before switching broadband provider
- Check whether you are inside a minimum contract term and whether early termination charges apply.
- Confirm the exact package speed, upload speed, installation method and expected activation date.
- Ask what router is included and whether mesh units, phone service or TV features cost extra.
- Read how and when the monthly price can change during the minimum term.
- Check whether email addresses, landline numbers, alarms or other services depend on the old connection.
- For most residential changes, the new provider manages the move through One Touch Switch, but read both providers’ switching notices carefully.

Which provider is best for gaming?
Prioritise stable low ping, low jitter, minimal packet loss and good loaded latency. Full fibre is often a strong starting point, but local routing, congestion, Wi-Fi and router queue management also matter.
Does full fibre guarantee gigabit Wi-Fi?
No. Full fibre describes the connection to the property. Device capability, distance, walls, interference and router specification still limit Wi-Fi. Use Ethernet when verifying a very fast service.
Why can my neighbour order a provider that I cannot?
Networks can stop at a particular pole, pavement, building or property boundary. Address records and installation obstacles can also differ. Check the full address with the provider and network operator.
Should I switch because one speed test is slow?
No. Repeat controlled Ethernet tests and investigate Wi-Fi, background use and faults first. Keep dated results if performance remains below the expected range.
