FTTP vs FTTC, SoGEA and G.fast: what actually reaches your home?

The biggest difference is the final access section. A fast package name cannot remove the physical limits of copper: FTTC, SoGEA and G.fast all retain copper somewhere between the network and the property, while FTTP carries fibre to an ONT inside the home.

SoGEA is a migration product, not a new fibre topology

SoGEA uses essentially the FTTC broadband access path: fibre to the cabinet and copper from the cabinet to the premises. The difference is service architecture — the traditional analogue phone-line service is removed and voice, where supplied, moves to IP. Where FTTP is not yet available, SoGEA is an important digital migration route, but it is still copper on the final leg.

G.fast pushed copper harder — FTTP removes the copper constraint

G.fast places high-speed electronics at a cabinet, pod or nearby distribution point so the remaining copper section is very short. It can be much faster than conventional FTTC at close range, but the final access still depends on copper. FTTP replaces that last copper section with fibre and therefore gives the network a much larger upgrade runway.

XGS-PON explained: the next generation of Openreach Full Fibre

XGS-PON stands for 10 Gigabit-capable Symmetric Passive Optical Network. Openreach explains that the X denotes 10 Gigabit capability and the S denotes symmetric capability — the optical platform can support the same headline capacity upstream and downstream. PON is “passive” because the shared optical distribution between the exchange and customers uses splitters that do not need electrical power.

What Openreach announced in August 2026

The XGS-PON pilot started in March across about 40,000 residential premises in Guildford and surrounding areas. On 19 August Openreach said it intends to make the faster capability available to more than one million premises over the next 12 months. Longer term, it is looking to upgrade around a third of its Full Fibre network over five years, subject to demand, build and equipment-modernisation plans.

Can You Actually Get 8.5 Gbps with Openreach XGS-PON?

XGS-PON itself is a 10 Gbps-capable symmetric optical technology. Openreach says an 8 Gbps consumer product could produce a speed-test result of roughly 8.5 Gbps with the right home equipment. That does not mean 8 Gbps Openreach packages are widely orderable today: pricing and detailed availability are due nearer launch and providers decide which wholesale products they actually sell.

Symmetry is a platform capability, not a promise that every package will be symmetric

The “S” in XGS-PON matters because upstream no longer has to be the much smaller side of the optical platform. But communications providers can still choose asymmetric retail profiles. Check the advertised upload speed rather than assuming every XGS-PON package will be 1:1.

Why XGS-PON is more important than simply “faster downloads”

More upstream headroom is valuable for cloud creation, AI workloads, off-site backups, telehealth, business applications and dense multi-user homes. The larger shared optical capacity also gives the network more room as average household usage grows.

The best full fibre broadband is not just the highest headline download speed. Check the technology, provider network, router, upload speed, minimum speed terms and whether the installation date fits your switching window.

UK network context: full fibre availability usually depends on the physical network reaching your property. That may be an Openreach-based service used by providers such as BT, EE, Sky and TalkTalk, or an alternative fibre network such as CityFibre, Virgin Media Nexfibre, Hyperoptic, YouFibre or another local altnet.

What is loaded latency? Normal ping measures responsiveness when the connection is relatively idle. Loaded latency measures how responsive it stays while the line is busy — for example while another device downloads a game update, uploads a backup or streams heavily. A good FTTP line can still feel laggy if the router allows queues to build under load, so test both ordinary ping and loaded latency.

Multi-gigabit port trap: the line can be faster than the router port

If you buy a 1.6 Gbps, 2 Gbps or faster package but the router exposes only standard 1 Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, a single wired computer cannot use the full line rate through that port. In practice, a 1GbE path typically tops out in the mid-900 Mbps range after protocol overhead.

For one device to exceed 1 Gbps, check the complete path: router WAN, router LAN, any network switch and the computer's network adapter. Power users should look for 2.5GbE or faster ports where they intend to use multi-gigabit capacity on one device.

1GbE will usually cap a 1 Gbps speed test

Physical installation reality

How full fibre reaches your home: pole, duct, wall entry and ONT

For a property that does not already have a usable FTTP connection, the work is physical rather than a software-only switch. The engineer agrees the route and equipment position before the fibre is brought inside.

Stage 1

Overhead pole or underground duct

Openreach says the fibre can arrive from a nearby overhead pole or through an underground duct. The route depends on how the property is already served and what infrastructure is usable.

Stage 2

External junction point

The fibre is normally brought to a small junction/splice point on the outside wall. If a duct is blocked or extra external work is needed, the installation can require a follow-up visit rather than completing in one appointment.

Stage 3

Small wall entry

The engineer agrees where a small hole should be drilled to bring the fibre into the property. If drilling or digging is required, Openreach says the engineer will ask for permission before starting the work.

Stage 4

Indoor ONT near power and router

An Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is fitted inside the home and connects to the broadband router over Ethernet. Plan the position carefully: the ONT needs power and the router should be close enough for a practical Ethernet run.

Flat, apartment or communal-building warning: Openreach may need a wayleave — permission from the landlord, freeholder or managing agent — before it can install new fibre infrastructure through communal or privately owned areas. This can add surveys, route approval and extra time, so check building permission before relying on a specific activation date.

Do you need gigabit full fibre?

Gigabit full fibre is useful if your home downloads large files, has several heavy users, streams in 4K, backs up to cloud storage or works with large media files. Many homes will feel a big upgrade from FTTC even on a mid-tier FTTP package.

For new consumer contracts since 17 January 2025, Ofcom no longer allows future inflation-linked or percentage-based in-contract price rises. If a provider intends to raise the core subscription price during the minimum term, it must tell you the increase upfront in pounds and pence and say when it will happen.
