How to Switch Broadband Provider

A simple checklist for switching broadband without avoidable downtime, duplicate billing or missed contract details.

Preparing test

Switching checklist

  1. Check whether you are in contract. If you leave during a minimum term, early termination charges may apply unless an exception applies.
  2. Run a speed test. Save peak and off-peak results so you know whether the issue is speed, Wi-Fi, latency or reliability.
  3. Check availability at your address. Look for full fibre, cable, 5G home broadband and alternative networks.
  4. Contact the new provider. In most residential switches, the new provider explains the process and arranges the switch.
  5. Read the switching information. Your old provider should send details such as early exit fees and affected services.
  6. Choose your switch date. Where technically possible, your new provider arranges the preferred date.

Before you switch

Check whether your current deal includes TV, mobile, landline, provider email, security extras or equipment that needs returning. These are the details that tend to cause billing confusion after the broadband itself has moved.

Also compare upload speed, router quality and contract price rises, not just headline download speed.
