What packet loss means
Packet loss occurs when small pieces of internet traffic are dropped before they reach their destination. Even a fast connection can feel poor if packets are being lost.
It is most noticeable during gaming, video calls, voice chat and livestreaming because these services rely on continuous real-time data.
What causes packet loss?
Common causes include weak Wi‑Fi, router overload, damaged cables, network congestion, poor signal quality, VPN issues or problems with your provider's network.
If packet loss improves on Ethernet but not Wi‑Fi, the issue is probably wireless signal quality inside the home.
How to reduce packet loss
Try Ethernet, restart your router, move closer to the router, pause large uploads, disconnect unused devices and test again at different times of day.
Persistent packet loss should be reported to your broadband provider, especially if it also happens on a wired connection.
