Wi-Fi 6 vs Wi-Fi 7

Wi-Fi 7 builds on Wi-Fi 6 with more speed headroom, lower latency potential and better use of multiple bands.

Main difference

Wi-Fi 6 is already a strong choice for most homes. Wi-Fi 7 is the next step up for newer devices, faster broadband packages and high-performance home networks.

The biggest practical differences are Multi-Link Operation, wider channel support and more efficient high-speed transmission in good conditions.

Wi-Fi 6 is usually enough when

  • You have broadband below around 500 Mbps.
  • Your devices are mostly Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6.
  • You want a good-value mesh system.
  • Your main problem is coverage, not maximum speed.

Wi-Fi 7 is more appealing when

  • You have gigabit full fibre.
  • You own newer Wi-Fi 7 phones or laptops.
  • You care about low latency and heavy multi-device use.
  • You want a more future-proof premium router or mesh system.

Will range be better?

Not automatically. Newer routers can have better antennas and processing, but Wi-Fi physics still matters. Higher frequency bands can be fast but may struggle more through thick walls. For dead zones, router placement and mesh node positioning are often more important than the Wi-Fi generation alone.
