Internet Speed Guide

Internet speed is more than one number. Download, upload, ping and jitter all affect how your connection feels.

Download speed

Download speed measures how quickly data moves from the internet to your device. It affects streaming, browsing, app updates, software downloads and loading online content.

For HD streaming, 5 to 10 Mbps per stream is usually enough. For 4K streaming, 25 Mbps or more is a better target. Busy homes may benefit from 100 Mbps or more.

Upload speed

Upload speed measures how quickly data travels from your device to the internet. It matters for sending files, backing up photos, video calls, cloud storage and livestreaming.

If you work from home, upload content or use video meetings often, upload speed can be just as important as download speed.

Ping and latency

Ping measures how long it takes for your device to send a request to a server and receive a response. It is measured in milliseconds.

Low ping is important for gaming, video calls and remote work tools. High download speed does not always guarantee low ping.

Jitter and stability

Jitter measures changes in ping over time. A stable connection with low jitter usually feels smoother than a connection where latency keeps jumping.

High jitter can cause lag spikes, call glitches, audio dropouts and inconsistent performance even when download speed looks good.

What speed do you need?

For browsing and email, 10 to 25 Mbps may be enough. For HD streaming and family use, 50 to 100 Mbps is more comfortable. For 4K streaming, large downloads and multiple devices, 100 Mbps or more is often worthwhile.

For gaming, focus on low ping and low jitter. For video calls and cloud backups, upload speed matters. For streaming and downloads, download speed is the main figure.
